Ai-Ai Delas Alas is known for being funny and bubbly on and off camera. Her quirky antiques and catchy one-liners made her popular among her fans and brought her to being one of the country’s finest female comedians. However, behind the laugh and smiles of the 53-year-old actress lies a problem she’s been dealing with since she was only 15 years old.
The Comedy Queen admitted to be suffering from psoriasis which made her life a bit difficult in the past. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes the appearance of abnormal patches in the skin. Patients with psoriasis are known to get flare-ups that make their skin itchy and scaly.
Unlike many would assume, this disease is not communicable. It can be acquired through genetics and can be triggered by infection or stress.
Ai-Ai confessed to having her disease sometimes affect her career. She said that she used to get worried people would find out about her disease whenever she’s asked to wear a swimsuit for a role. Despite her condition, the renowned actress remained hopeful.
“Hindi ka talaga mag-gi-give up kasi una sa lahat, wala naman kasi siyang gamot,” she said on an interview with GMA 7. On a lighter note, Ai-Ai seemed to have found the solution to keeping psoriasis at bay.
The actress revealed that a change in her diet helped her from getting unwanted flare ups. She said that she avoids eating carb-loaded food and replaces refined sugar with natural sweeteners. Additionally, she eats an all-organic diet.
“Since this is autoimmune na disease, dapat hindi ka nagkakasakit,” Ai-Ai added. She further revealed that since she assumed a healthier lifestyle two years ago, no flare-ups occurred to her.
