Miracle dog? Stray dog survives after being buried alive

The popular saying “dogs are man’s best friend” is enough proof that this furry creature is one of the most gentle and precious companions on Earth. They will do anything to make their humans happy and even comfort them when they are sad. It’s even been scientifically proven that dogs help alleviate stress and reduce anxiety. Sadly, not everyone sees the importance of our canine friends and some of them are left abandoned, or worse buried alive.

Lily is the friendly pooch that roamed around the streets and schoolyards of Cape Town, South Africa. The gentle creature scavenges garbage in order to get food for sustenance. What sets her apart from other stray dogs is her determination to survive.

The little furball suffered from a fracture in her spine. She couldn’t move around properly due to her partial paralysis. Although she’s docile in nature, some people in her neighborhood sees her as annoying.

One horrifying day, the school principle of Luhlaza Secondary School Khayelitsha grew tired of seeing the dog around the schoolyard and ordered two janitors to bury poor Lily alive.

Upon learning about what they did to Lily, the schools kitchen helper immediately sought help from International Fund for Animal Welfare’s (IFAW) Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha to help save her.

Everyone felt that things were hopeless for Lily because she has been buried underground for more than 20 minutes before help arrived. In what seems to be a miracle, the rescuers were able to find Lily alive despite being buried five feet deep in dirt.

Rescuers described Lily as a warrior after surviving such cruel fate. IFAW helped her during her recovery where she received several treatments including hydrotherapy, acupuncture. These treatments helped Lily gain back his muscle movements.

Right now, Lily is in a much healthier and safer condition. Her story brought light to the raising number of stray dogs in Africa.
