Eugene Domingo talks about the importance of faith in mental health

In the wake of celebrities taking their own lives, people are becoming more aware of this sensitive topic and their mental well-being. People of all ages went on social media to express their thoughts and opinions on the sensitive topic. In turn, more celebrities now use their influence to openly talk about address this obviously pressing issue. This include seasoned actress Eugene Domingo.

Eugene recently starred the lead role in the theatre play, Night Mother. The Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA) adapted Marsha Norman’s Pulitzer Prize Winning work to its 50th season.

Night Mother tells the story of Jesse, an epileptic divorcee plagued with the dilemma of ending her own life. That very same night, Jesse confronted her mother, Thelma to bear her the news. Thelma on the other hand convinces her daughter that there is still more to life that is worth living for.

The play is very different from PETA’s usual grandiose performances with a hyper-realistic approach to Jesse’s story. According to Eugene, the producers didn’t choose to stage the play for shock value. Instead, they wanted the organization to tackle more intimate and hardly talked about topics including mental health.

Eugene revealed that through talk backs, the cast and crew members of the show learned from their audience that such topic is rampantly talked about among the youth.

“So natuwa kami na we had given them a chance, we gave them a chance na ma-express ‘yung kung papaano binu-view ng millennials ‘yung importance ng surviving nila everyday,” she said.

The actress also talked about methods of dealing through tough times and emphasized on the importance of faith.

“You have to have faith. Kung tayo ay may paniniwala – wag na natin kwestyunin kung ano ba ‘yung pinaniniwalaan mo – as long as you have faith sa sarili natin, sa mga kaibigan natin, sa minamahal natin, sa plano natin, we will survive everyday. Don’t lose your faith, and most of all, if you have not tried yet, prayer is very strong,” Eugene added.
