Astronaut made an amazing discovery in space but kept it for himself it for almost five decades

The universe is strange, filled with countless mysteries yet to be discovered by mankind. In 1959, astronaut Gordon Cooper discovered something while orbiting the Earth and kept it a secret for years.

As a young boy, Gordon was fascinated with flying – after his military father took him on a ride in his airplane. 25 years later, his dream became a reality as he became a part of the Marines and Air force and was a test pilot on Edwards Air Force Base.

At that time, NASA was looking for possible astronauts that can stay in space overnight—something no one has ever done before.

After making it to the 109 short-listed candidates, he was then chosen alongside six men and boarded the Faith 7, his first ever trip to space.

In 1963, project Mercury was launched. Their mission was simple: go into space solo, survive overnight, and observe the effects of long-time exposure to zero gravity on the human body. The spacecraft also has an auto-pilot system built in it so the astronauts no longer had to worry about maneuvering it around space.

From May 15 to 16, for just about 34 hours, Cooper successfully orbited Earth, becoming the first astronaut to fall asleep in space. But a small hiccup occurred in the almost flawless mission when the auto-pilot failed just when Cooper was about to land. Being a skilled pilot that he is, he took it upon himself to control the spacecraft and carefully land it.

Cooper then began to board more successful space explorations after that. But unbeknownst to NASA, he kept a something valuable he took in space—photographs.

“Man, all I do is take pictures, pictures, pictures,” he said in a message to ground control.

While taking pictures he found something that caught his attention—an anomaly he found in the Caribbean. He then drew a map that did not make sense to him at first. When he landed on Earth, he started researching and found out that the anomalies were related to the sea expedition courses by the Spaniards. Being busy with the years he spent on space, he kept the discovery to himself just before he died when he told his friend Darrell Miklos.

Darell made sure that his friend’s discovery won’t go to waste and started an exploration in the Caribbean with guidance of Cooper’s map. And to his relief, he found an anchor that led to a ship that dated back in the Spanish colonization era. He then proceeds to other five locations and found more wrecked ships.
