Not many people are capable of thinking straight when faced with a stressful situation. Luckily for this woman, she was able to think of a clever way to save herself during a train robbery. Meet Julie Dragland, a 32-year-old resident from Oakland, California who’s name became viral due to her True Crime-inspired escape.
Julie has always been a fan of crime-related shows on television. It was September 2017 when she put her true crime knowledge to test. The 32-year-old woman was riding to Dublin when a co-passenger dropped a note on her lap.
Upon reading the note written on a scrap of paper, Julie felt like she was doused in cold water. The note contains the following threats:
“There are two guns pointed at you now. If you want to live hand back your wallet + phone NOW + do not turn around and be discreet. Do not turn around until after you have left Civic Center + you will live.”
Faced with a crisis, the woman knew she had just minutes to save herself. Since there’s no other way to alert the passengers around her without risking her life from the thieves, she had no other options but to think outside the box.
Fortunately, months before the incident, Julie watched an episode of a crime show with the similar situation.
After assessing her chances of escape and calling other people’s attention, the 32-year-old decided to fake having seizures.
In an interview, Julie described vividly how she managed to make her ‘acting’ convincing:
“I slumped sideways and started shaking and crying, I closed my eyes and increased the vigor so people would pay attention.”
Soon enough, a nearby couple came to her aid to assist her. At the next stop, the woman who dropped the note on Julie’s lap exited the train. It turns out that there were no gunmen waiting to fire at Julie. Upon further investigation, they found out that the note was only a scam intended to get money and important belongings from unwary passengers.
Luckily for Julie, she was able to think of a quick escape from the train robbery. Had she panicked, the situation will surely turn out much worse.
