However, did you know that behind the childhood doll’s smiling faces, it actually hides a disturbing history? This secret has been kept hidden by the doll’s original creator, 21-year-old Xavier Roberts. Even the company executives are trying to keep this controversial issue a secret for the fear that their booming business might lose its influence.

Although his initial intention to make children happy was actually noble, his methods of attaining this are less so. According to a report from Boredom Therapy, some people discovered that your favorite childhood doll was actually not an original idea of Roberts. Rather, it has been around for quite some time before the young businessman adopted it.

While young Roberts was visiting a craft shop one day, he saw the hand-made dolls created by Martha Nelson Thomas. Whether it was inspiration that struck him, or just an intuition that the dolls would sell, nobody knows for certain. But one thing is for sure: he left the store with a bright yet vile idea and a doll in hand.

Soon enough, Xavier Roberts was selling an identical copy of the childhood doll all over his place. He charged people way more than the original price, that’s why Martha caught wind of his gimmick. She tried to stop Roberts, but he was too reluctant to stop his now-booming doll business.

In 1985, a trial was held after Martha filed a lawsuit against Xavier Roberts. Even though she did not disclose how she won the case, all Martha had to say about the matter is her children would “go to college,” implying that she won a large sum from the lawsuit.
